okay! back to the pink m&m’s!

25 Nov

somewhere out there in blogland, i found a cute little ditty about quilter’s vitamins. So i grabbed up about 100 baby food jars (AFTER ian was finished with them!), spray painted the lid, slapped on a label with the little ditty printed on it and filled them with pink m&m’s.

sounds easy peasy right? not so much with me. so i knew that the wedding type stores had m&m’s in typical “wedding” colors so i popped in and picked up a bag along with one other minor purchase (a dog bone cookie cutter) and my bill came to $50 some dollars (i’m not exactly sure since my accounting method involves rounding up to the nearest $500). and i thot…gee that’s a little high, i wonder why (sometimes i rhyme when i think….) but wrangling a delightful one year old in a store with lots of glass tends to requires the majority of my focus so i just paid and left.

when i got home i realized i had a 5 pound bag of m&m’s that would fill less than 20 jars. that means that i need (insert pause while i find the calculator) 4+ bags at $50(0) (rounding method in place) to fill 80+ jars = $200(0)+ . even the $200 tally was not worth it to me! crap. it was a great idea.

decided to try adding peanuts to the m&m’s to s t r e t c h them. just didn’t keep the “vitamin” idea when mixed with nuts. double crap.

then my friend goes on vacation to branson mo, and found bags of PINK breast cancer m&m’s at a very reasonable rate. horray for me. only trouble is, you needed a coupon and could only purchase 2 bags. i need 26 bags. but bless her heart, she was willing to coerce her vacation buddies into making 13 trips to purchase what i needed.

i decided to call the local chain of stores and see if they were carrying them. yea kay! they were. the coupons were available in the store and even without the coupon, the price was reasonable. my daughter and ian were in town so i asked if they would pop in and pick up 26 bags for me. no problem.

except they had to hit 4 of the stores throughout the city in order to get all 26 bags! what a nice kid. and ian must have charmed them all as they let her use one coupon and let her have all that the store had.

so anyhoo….after all that. this is what i made to give out to my little “thimble heads” the last quilt club that i lead for the lqs a week or so ago.

I was wondering when we got to find out what your M&Ms were for. Great idea!

Love that idea . . . and . . . love the story of collecting the pink m & m’s. Where there is a will there is a way – at least for those of us who are strong, determined women!

That’s a good idea Kay. Sounds like it cost you a bundle though.
